![]() Of the more-than-300,000 people served by Food Bank of the Rockies (FBR), 42 percent are children. That’s why FBR created the Children’s Nutrition Network, comprising:
Last year, FBR served more than 5,000 snacks every week in its After School Snacks for Tutoring program. With six Denver schools participating, FBR’s next area of program expansion is into recreation and community centers, tying in physical fitness with nutrition. ![]() Kevin Seggelke, FBR’s president and CEO, explains, “The city has about 20 recreational centers for kids. Some have swimming pools; virtually all of them have gymnasiums, a weight room, some kind of park program and computer tutoring or computer education rooms. “All we do is provide a snack for the kids after school, a nutritious snack. Obviously, [teachers] like that because it helps the attention span and discipline of the kids.” Hunger can negatively affect behavior, test scores, attendance and, overall, students’ mental and physical development. The continually rising demand for hunger relief doesn’t discourage FBR. Seggelke says, “We’re not naive enough to think we’re going to end hunger on our own. But we do think that we can, at some point in time, provide enough food for those who need it, that anybody who needs or wants a meal can find it and get it.” Learn more at www.foodbankrockies.org. |
