Outback Vehicles to the Rescue

For the last eight years, Subaru has donated a small fleet of emergency lifeguard support vehicles to the City of Coronado, California.

Four specially marked Outback vehicles patrol the beaches each day, fitted with custom roof racks to carry rescue paddle boards, spinal immobilization equipment, emergency lights and sirens.

Inside, there is plenty of cargo space to hold the team's first aid kit, oxygen, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), emergency dive rescue equipment and more.

"These Outbacks can do it all," Cornonado Beach Lifeguard Captain Sean Carey said. "They are extremely reliable, comfortable, and capable; the All-Wheel Drive system works great in the sand."

The Coronado Beach Outback vehicles even carry a pet oxygen mask for canine misadventures! Sergeant Aaron Wonders poses with a four-legged friend and the lifesaving gear.

INSIDER TIPS

Driving in Severe Weather: Earthquake!
Part 2 in a series. Next Insider — Hurricane

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes can strike any location at any time. Driving during a seismic event has been compared to driving on four flat tires.

If an earthquake occurs while you are driving:

  • Slow down until you can safely pull over and stop.
  • Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
  • Remain in your vehicle with your seat belt on until the shaking stops.
  • Turn on your radio and listen for emergency broadcast advisories.

Once the earthquake has stopped, proceed with extra care. Remember that aftershocks follow the initial earthquake. After the earthquake:

  • Be on the alert for panicked drivers.
  • Turn on your car radio and listen for emergency broadcast advisories.
  • Drive with extra caution, watching for damaged roads, bridges and overpasses.
  • Never attempt to drive across bridges or overpasses that have been damaged.
  • Beware of the potential for mudslides and landslides. If you're near the ocean, be aware that tsunamis are associated with large earthquakes. Get to high ground.
  • If the power is out and the traffic signals are not working, treat intersections as four-way stops.
