More than 500 exotic American, Japanese and European cars will be on display Saturday, July 19, at the 2014 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix (PVGP). Sponsored by Pittsburgh-area Subaru retailers, the PVGP is one of the largest vintage race events in the country.
The Schenley Park race course is considered by many drivers to be the most challenging race course worldwide. Run on actual city streets, the 2.33-mile PVGP course delivers 23 turns along with haybales, manhole covers, phone poles and stone walls.
Vintage racers will gather to test their skills and entertain the crowd, while attendees will get an up-close look a wide array of antique and classic cars.

Ellen Schneiderman's Giant Schnauzer Bogie
Bogie Fits!
As an animal trainer, I frequently transport dogs and birds of prey in my vehicle. Most of my K-9 clients are large, hairy, sometimes unruly and excitable. So is my hundred-pound Giant Schnauzer, Bogie. The raptors are more civilized. I leased my first Forester in 2009. It was a good fit – roomy, utilitarian and rugged. It ran perfectly, was comfortable and always made me feel safe.
So it was without any hesitation that when it was time to turn in my 2010, I leased the 2014 Forester. I didn't even look at another car. How could I not love the new features? The automatic rear gate is my favorite. The dogs love it, too; and it's a great training tool. While it's true that new car smell has been quickly overpowered by wet/muddy dog smell, I don't care. I love it all the more. It does everything I need it to do, and then some!

Happy Trails, Safe Travels
Safety is a priority on any road trip, but pet companions necessitate extra precautions. Even mild fender benders can be life threatening to those who aren't properly restrained. Loose cats have been known to wedge themselves beneath a brake pedal, and a hard stop can throw an unrestrained animal into the windshield.
 • Show Some Restraint: To prevent injury, pets should always be secured in the rear seat when the car is moving – dogs in a seatbelt and harness, cats in a carrier. As much as your pet may want to ride shotgun, the explosive force of an expanding airbag can crush a cat carrier and seriously injure an animal in the passenger seat. If you have an SUV, another option is installing a barrier behind the rear seat that keeps your pet confined to the cargo area.
 • Pack It In: If your car is piled with luggage or household goods, make sure everything is securely tied down to prevent heavy objects from toppling onto your pet while the vehicle is in motion.
 • Caution – Precious Cargo: To prevent theft or heat stroke, never leave your pet in your vehicle unattended. Even with windows cracked, the temperature inside a vehicle on a mild day can rapidly rise to dangerous levels that can cause brain damage or death.

 • Everybody Inside: Don't let your dog ride with their head out the window. As much as they enjoy the wind in their fur, flying rocks and debris can cause injury and the increased airflow can damage lungs.
 • Make Like a Boy Scout: Make sure your pet's vaccinations are up to date, pack a copy of their records and, in case of emergency, a list of veterinary clinics along your route.
Keep your pets safe while traveling.
