Since the first Penny Harvest 20 years ago, $8.6 million dollars have been raised and donated to charity by children. In 2007, the Young Philanthropists Foundation based in Denver, Colorado, began running Penny Harvest for the state. Since then, it has helped children give more than $200,000 back to their communities.
The Penny Harvest program helps raise children’s awareness about issues in their local community. Through the process, Young Philanthropists Foundation works with the kids to implement the program and identify their interest areas for a grant. The children collect penny donations from their families and neighbors. Then they identify nonprofit organizations and research them. Unlike other coin harvesting programs, Penny Harvest gives students total independence to decide where the money should go. Grants ranging from $100 to $1,000 have gone to support animals, education, and hunger. In addition, the kids participate in corresponding service projects with the chosen organization.
This program is designed to help kids make a difference with issues they have chosen as important. The kids learn the importance of civic engagement and teamwork and develop a greater understanding of their school and community as well as the needs of others around them.
Through a grant, Subaru of America Foundation helps support the Young Philanthropists Foundation in the 50 schools currently participating. Young Philanthropists provides this program to schools at no cost and gives each child a kit, provides curriculum, and trains teachers to run the program at the school.
“Our goal is ultimately to take the program state wide and have every district in the state represented,” revealed Alexis Boian, executive director of the Young Philanthropists Foundation.
