Subaru Rally Team USA Wins X Games Rally Medal

Travis Pastrana/Christian Edstrom finished first in X Games 12’s rally event –
the first one for X Games.

Subaru Rally Team USA participated in ESPN’s X Games 12 in early August. Drivers/co-drivers Travis Pastrana/Christian Edstrom and Ken Block/Alex Gelsomino joined 10 other teams in Los Angeles to be part of the first-ever rally event in X Games’ schedule of extreme sports.

The choice was appropriate. Going into X Games Rally, the team of Pastrana/Edstrom led the Rally America series in points for the season, with Block/Gelsomino tied with Andrew Pinker/Robbie Durant for second. Pinker/Durant were also X Games Rally participants.

The Subaru Rally Team USA service area had two extra cars for the event. World Rally Championship driver and former champion Colin McRae’s Sobe No Fear Impreza WRX STI was prepared by Vermont SportsCar, which fields the Subaru Rally Team USA. So was the Rockstar Energy Drink Subaru driven by Tanner Faust/Scott Crouch.

Rolling over
completely, McRae/
Grist continued on
to finish in second

The 12 invited rally drivers first competed Wednesday, August 2, in eight gravel stages north of Los Angeles. At the end of the rally stages’ 40 miles, Colin McRae/Nicky Grist were less than a second ahead of Pastrana/Edstrom. The two teams were separated from the rest of the field, which had Block/Gelsomino in close competition for third with two other teams. That was the backdrop for Saturday’s final special stage, held in and around the Home Depot Center.

Running in reverse order from last to first, the teams posted quicker and quicker times on the course. Pastrana/Edstrom were in the lead with McRae/Grist last to run. McRae had an excellent drive going when he landed sideways on the stadium’s jump the second time around. Rolling over completely, McRae/Grist continued on to finish in second place.

Final podium spots were all Subaru: Pastrana/Edstrom first, McRae/Grist second, and Block/Gelsomino third.
