Each of the two cameras scans the road through a 25-degree arc from the vehicle’s centerline. A full horizontal sweep takes approximately 0.1 second.
A processor in the EyeSight housing determines the perceived distances between objects in the road from one camera’s image to the next, much like your two eyes perceive an object’s location. (Try this: When you look at an object and close one eye, then open it and close the other, you perceive a distance between where each eye sees an object. That’s what EyeSight does with the cameras.)
As it scans, the EyeSight system recognizes if that distance is changing. If it grows, the vehicle is approaching the object. If the distance shrinks, it’s moving away from the vehicle.
The system recognizes objects moving in the same direction of travel – not across the vehicle’s path.
The EyeSight processor determines if the closing speed presents a dangerous situation, and it is networked with engine, transmission, and chassis system processors that enable actions to be taken. Networked systems and sensors include those for the Anti-lock Braking System, Vehicle Dynamics Control System, Brake Assist, steering-angle sensor, and the gauge cluster in the instrument panel.
The EyeSight system uses processed information for a variety of functions.
Adaptive Cruise Control combines the benefits of cruise control with active monitoring of the road ahead by EyeSight, and it issues warnings and activates automatic braking when needed. It can regulate vehicle speed to keep a safe following distance from the car ahead. It does not replace conventional cruise control, which still can be used when desired. Lead Vehicle Start Alert notifies the driver when the vehicle in front has started moving, but the EyeSight driver’s vehicle has not.
This function can recognize an impending collision with the vehicle or obstacle in front of the EyeSight vehicle, alert the driver, and even automatically apply the brakes up to 0.8 G or full braking pressure to help avoid a collision or minimize the impact when a collision is inevitable.
If EyeSight recognizes an impending collision with the vehicle or obstacle in front of the EyeSight vehicle, and the driver is applying the brakes but not with enough brake pedal force, Pre-Collision Brake Assist automatically applies up to full braking pressure to try to shorten braking distances.
This function is designed to help prevent drivers from accelerating into a stopped vehicle or other obstacle in front of them. It warns the driver and reduces engine power until he or she applies the brakes to avoid an impact.
Pre-Collision Throttle Management is helpful when:
- The driver inadvertently selects Drive instead of Reverse and starts to accelerate toward a parked car, wall, or parking structure.
- Starting to merge onto another road when the vehicle ahead accelerates, but then stops.
Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they unintentionally move out of their travel lane. It is not designed to take corrective vehicle action other than issuing visual and audible warnings. Lane Sway Warning acts in a similar way, detecting unusual back-and-forth vehicle movement within the driver’s lane of travel that usually is indicative of a drowsy driver.
Lane departure, sway, and pre-collision braking functions can be turned off by the driver.
EyeSight is covered under basic warranty coverage of 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, and under the Added Security Gold Plus package.
