Six years ago, an initiative began to help Atlanta area high school students bridge the gap in international education and prepare them for study abroad, student exchanges, and international college internships. Through Georgia State University and its Office of International Initiatives, students take part in the WorldQuest youth education program of the national network of World Affairs Councils.
At the beginning of each school year, WorldQuest reaches out to teachers to sponsor high school teams formed of four students each. Teams are given a study guide and topics, from which 10 sets of 10 questions are selected. In 2011, the Atlanta competition consisted of 17 teams.
The local WorldQuest competition determines the winning team, which attends the National Academic WorldQuest competition in Washington, D.C. Drawing from the same topics used in local competition, winning teams from more than 40 local World Affairs Councils in 26 states take part in a three-hour competition to determine the national winner.
Subaru of America Foundation has given a grant to the Atlanta-based chapter for the next competition. “We’re very happy about the sponsorship from Subaru,” shared Kike Ehigiator, director of international partnerships and initiatives at the office of international affairs at Georgia State University. The grant will help “… to promote this to get to a place where we have 25 teams.” Academic WorldQuest™ is promoted to teachers through the Georgia Council for Social Studies and the Georgia Department of Education.
