Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA), was one of 10 nominees for the Sustainia award. Sustainia is a project partnering a number of Danish and multinational companies and organizations with the goal of communicating the benefits of living in a sustainable society.
SIA first was selected as one of the top 100 sustainable solutions in the world, then chosen as one of the top 10 solutions to run for the top awards – the Sustainia Award and Sustainia Community Award. The Sustainia Community Award recipient was selected by public voting.
The category under which SIA competed for votes was Best Resource Solution. In part, its presentation for voting read:
“Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. is the first automotive assembly plant to be ‘Zero Landfill.’ By reducing, reusing, and recycling 99.9 percent of its waste, the plant avoids sending any waste to landfills … the plant has been announced a designated Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. We nominate this solution for proving that when environmental policies and practices are in place, an organization of any size can lower its environmental impact and also achieving the ‘green dividend’ in cost reduction. The solution is a great inspirational case … for other companies to see that it is doable and creates benefits … economically, environmentally, and socially by encouraging sustainable work practices.”
Located in Lafayette, Indiana, SIA assembles Subaru Legacy, Outback, and Tribeca vehicles.
